Classification and characteristics of PE pipes

PE pipes are commonly used in water supply system. So what are their classification and characteristics? Let's take a look.
In China's municipal pipe market, drainage pipes and gas pipes are in great demand. And because PE (polyethylene) materials are of high strength,high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, non-toxicity and wear resistance, they are widely used in the manufacturing field of water supply and drainage. Besides, because they are anti-rust, pipes made by PE materials are ideal for replacing normal iron water supply pipes.
China National Bureau of Standards has made dramatic changes, revisions in the new GB/T13663-2000 Standard, which stipulates that water supply pipes with PE80 and PE100 correspond to different pressure intensities, removes the tensile strength properties of the old standards, increases breaking elongation (bigger than 350%) and emphasizes the basic toughness.

The wear resistance of HDPE is the best and most eye-catching in all engineering plastics and it even surpasses these of many metal materials like carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, etc. The higher the molecular weight is, the more wearable the material is. Under strong corrosion and easy-to-be-abrased conditions, the service life of HDPE pipes (more than 20 years in the underground) is 4-6 times longer than that of steel pipes, 9 times than that of normal PE pipes, and the conveying efficiency of HDPE pipes is increased by 20%. They also have characteristics such as flame retardant and good antistatic properties that meet the requirements of the standard, remarkable economic benefit, excellent impact resistance.
Drainage Pipes
HDPE pipes are the preferred pipes for municipal engineering, mainly in the sewage treatment industry. Since they are of wear resistance, acid and corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, especially high weight and being easy to install and move, they have gradually replaced the positions of traditional pipes such as steel pipes, cement pipes in the market, becoming the first choice of pipes with new types of materials. There are some points needed attention when choosing HDPE pipes: Firstly, pay attention to the raw materials for plastic pipes. There are various grades of PE raw materials, the prices of some of the PE raw materials that are unable to be used and may cost big losses due to reworking are as low as a few thousand yuan per ton. Secondly, it is better to choose formal and professional pipe manufacturers. Thirdly, when selecting PE pipes, one should inspect the manufacturer on the spot to see if it has production capacity.
Water Supply Pipes
PE pipes for water supply are a replacement for traditional steel pipes and PVC pipes. The water supply pipes must withstand a certain pressure, so they are often used PE materials that have big molecular weight and good mechanical property, such as HDPE. In contrast, LDPE materials have low tensile strength, poor pressure resistance and rigidity, as well as terrible dimensional stability and being difficult to connect, so, they are not suitable as the materials for water supply pipes. Due to their high health indicators, PE, especially HDPE have become common materials for the water supply pipes. HDPE has a small melt viscosity, good fluidity and is easy to process, so the range of its melt index is wide, which is usually between 0.3-3 g/10 min.
