Water Conveying Pipes at Home and Abroad
Posted: 12/29/2022 19:26:17  Hits: 5
At present, there are many kinds of pipes for water delivery. Outdoor water delivery pipes can be divided into two categories, that is, metal pipes and non-metal pipes. The outdoor metal water pipes that are widely used now mainly include steel pipes and ductile iron pipes. Steel pipes are divided into welded steel pipes and seamless steel pipes. Welded steel pipes are divided into spiral seam welded steel pipes and straight seam welded steel pipes. Spiral seam welded steel pipes are divided into automatic submerged arc welded steel pipes and high frequency welded steel pipes. Seamless steel pipes are divided into hot-rolled pipes and cold-rolled pipes according to the manufacturing method.

The steel pipe has the best mechanical strength and can withstand high internal and external pressure. The weldability of the pipe body facilitates the manufacture of various pipe fittings, and is especially suitable for pipelines with complex terrain and high requirements. Corrosion is the biggest disadvantage. However, if the internal and external protection of the steel pipe is properly handled, the service life will be very long. According to reports, a pipe with a diameter of 1 meter in Shanghai Yangshupu Water Plant has been used for 60 years and is still in good condition.

At present, steel pipes with socket welded ends have been widely used in foreign countries. It is the second generation of traditional steel pipes. The quality of the welding seam is improved; the stress concentration of the circumferential welding seam is reduced, and bursting and leaking are prevented for the pipeline.

At present, the main products of large-diameter pipes used in water delivery projects are prestressed steel cylinder concrete pressure pipes (PCCP), ductile iron pipes (DIP) and steel pipe (SP). The selection of water delivery pipes is determined after a comprehensive analysis of project scale, importance, pipe diameters, working pressure, engineering geology, topography, external load conditions, project duration, and capital control.

General situation of pipes for delivering water at home and abroad
Foreign pipes for delivering water

The earliest pipes for delivering water appeared in 1668, and cast iron pipes (gray cast iron) were used to build water pipelines from the suburbs of Paris to the Palace of Versailles. From 1940 to 1945, the French Bonner Pipeline Company designed and manufactured prestressed steel cylinder concrete pipes (PCCP pipes) due to the shortage of steel in France at that time, and then the United States began to use PCCP pipes as water pipes in large quantities. After the 1960s, Europe and the United States gradually eliminated ordinary gray cast iron pipes and began to use many ductile iron pipes. The American Water Association publicly released a special report on the failure of PC-CP pipes in 2008 due to frequent accidents such as pipe bursts during the long-term service of PCCP pipes. North America no longer use PCCP pipes in new water pipelines. At present, PCCP pipes are generally used in non-pressurized water supply pipelines in North America, and newly developed socket water delivery steel pipes are used to replace PCCP pipes in water pipelines. In the United States, steel pipes are mainly used for large-diameter water pipes above DN800 mm, and ductile iron pipes below DN800 mm.

Domestic water pipes
From 1950 to 1960, cast iron pipes were widely used in various water delivery projects due to the shortage of steel in China and the low level of steel smelting and rolling technology. Since the 1980s, the production technology of PCCP pipes and ductile iron pipes has been successively introduced from the United States, Europe and other countries and regions, and ductile iron pipes have been widely used in municipal water supply and drainage projects. PCCP pipes have also been widely used in large-diameter pipes over 2 meters. Since the 21st century, with the rapid development of domestic iron and steel metallurgical technology, mass production of high-performance plates, steel pipes have started to be used for high-end oil and gas pipelines to ordinary water pipelines, mainly used for urban buried water supply and drainage pipeline reconstruction, urban large-scale water diversion projects, urban pipe corridors and other projects. They can also be used as engineering structural pipes and pile pipes, and are widely used in various water conservancy projects due to their high strength, good toughness, safety and reliability.
